Give a Discord Role Automatically in a Voice Channel: What It Is Good For and What to Watch Out For
Discord cannot give a role on its own while someone is in a voice channel. A bot can. What voice roles are good for, how to set them up and the three mistakes people make at the start.

Sooner or later the question comes up on almost every bigger server: can people automatically get a role while they are in voice? Discord itself cannot do that. Roles and channel permissions know no state like "currently sits in a voice channel". A bot can, because it sees who joins a channel, switches or leaves.
At AlphaCloud the module is called Voice Roles. It came from two suggestions on our ideas board, and the use cases behind them were more varied than we expected.
What voice roles are good for
Whoever is talking shows up on top. A role "In Voice" that is displayed separately in the member list shows at a glance where something is happening. Especially on servers that are quiet during the day, this pulls people into the channel who would never have looked otherwise.
A channel only for people in voice. Discord does have a text chat in every voice channel, but sometimes you want a channel of your own, for music commands, links for the current round or spoilers for the film everyone is watching. Let only the voice role view the channel, and it appears when people join and disappears when they leave.
Areas with a role of their own. Roles per channel or whole category keep areas apart. Whoever sits in the "Gaming" category gets the "Gaming" role and sees the matching text channel with lobby codes, whoever sits in the "Study room" sees the channel with the notes.
Whoever is live stands out. Roles of their own for camera, stream or both show who is streaming right now. On community servers with watch parties or game nights, that is often the reason to drop in at all.
The setup
The technical part is done quickly:
- Create the roles in Discord, below the bot's highest role
- In the panel, enable the Voice Roles module under Moderation
- Set the Role while in voice, plus Roles per channel or category and the roles under Camera and stream as you need them
- Save, join a voice channel and check whether the role arrives
Whoever is already in voice when you save gets their roles within a few seconds. Every field and limit is in the Voice Roles documentation.
Three mistakes people make at the start
Using a role that already exists. The bot fully manages the roles you set: whoever is not in a matching channel loses them. If you pick a role you also hand out manually or through another module, it disappears from everyone who is not in voice at that moment. Always use roles of their own for voice roles.
Forgetting the AFK channel. Whoever ends up in the AFK channel is technically in voice and gets the role. That is rarely what you want, especially when the role sits at the top of the member list. Add the AFK channel and areas like temporary channels under Excluded channels and categories. Rules of their own for a channel and the camera and stream roles still apply there.
Putting permissions in the wrong place. The voice role should unlock a channel, not hand out permissions across the whole server. Give it no extra permissions server wide, only allow "View Channel" in the matching channel. That way nothing can go wrong if someone keeps the role a few seconds longer than expected.
What happens in the background
We made a few decisions on purpose, because in daily use they make the difference.
The voice channel is the truth. The bot does not remember who is in voice, it follows what Discord reports. When it restarts, for example for an update, it goes once through everyone in voice or holding one of the roles and brings the roles in line with the current state. An update should not leave anyone with a role they should no longer have.
Only one camera and stream role at a time. Whoever streams and then turns the camera on switches from "Stream only" to "Camera and stream". Two roles at once would only have shown twice in the member list what one role already says.
Muting does not count. Turning the microphone or sound off changes nothing about the roles. Otherwise the bot would hand out and collect roles on every short mute, and the member list would keep jumping.
Turning it off does not clean up. If you switch the module off or remove a role from the settings, members who have it at that moment keep it. Take it away once by hand, fastest through the role in Discord's server settings.
Free and Premium
The role for any voice channel, up to 50 exclusions and the three camera and stream roles are free. Rules per channel or category come with 3 without Premium and 25 with it. For most servers three are enough: one per area where something actually happens.
You find Voice Roles in the panel under Moderation. If you use temporary voice channels, our guide to join to create channels is a good next read.
